Veterans Day with Vice Admiral Ron Thunman
Admiral Nils (Ron) Thunman was a pioneer nuclear submariner, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to the mid-1980s. His career highlights include command of the Plunger, a nuclear attack submarine, command of the entire Pacific submarine fleet, key assignments in the personnel file, a tour as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Submarine Warfare, (where he helped field the Tomahawk missile and find the RMS Titanic), and Chief of Naval Education and Training.
Moderator Mark DePue will discuss with Admiral Thunman topics including:
- His relationship with Admiral Hyman Rickover (father of the nuclear navy as well as the civilian nuclear power program)
- His experiences commanding a nuclear powered attack submarine, trailing Soviet subs and patrolling the oceans
- The role that both ballistic missile (boomer) and attack subs had in winning the Cold War against the Soviet Union
The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session. All military are invited to tour the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum free of charge on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, 2017.
